The first Hornet legacy from US Marines All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242 as known as The Bats with their dedicated motto "Mors Ex Tenebris". The most proud VMFA squadron in US Marine due to their service given support to US Marine during various war that has been inflicted US to joined it.

The Bats received Hornet D in early 1991 and that hornet D already been combat proven in participated in support  of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm 1991 and Operation Enduring Freedom. The most valuable and significant effort of this Squadron when this squadron has give full and deadly provided ground Air Support to 1st Marine Division in Fallujah during Operation Phantom Fury 2005 to counter back insurgency around that city.

Due to a re-organization within Marine aviation, VMFA(AW)-242 moved from MAG-11 at MCAS Miramar to MAG-12 in its current home at Iwakuni in 2008. Since then, the Bats have been providing recon along North Korea in the effort of global security. The squadron maintains a high state of readiness throughout the area by deploying constantly and keeping operations high. "If a balloon goes up, the Bats are going to be the first ones there.
